Barrie's Curbers Beat All
A 1992 UCDA Curbsider study of just one Barrie Area paper, the Simcoe Shopper, resulted
in the highest proportion of curbsiders that has ever been found. The 10 week survey
of 2,412 different cars showed that over 40% were curbed cars.
Many of the curbsiders that were uncovered in the follow-up were "professional"
enough not to transfer the registration into their own name. The proof of their
advertising, however, was enough for the Ministry to take action.
Naturally, all of the results of the Barrie Area Computer Study were passed along
to the Registrar's office. This data is continuing evidence of the immense size
and scope of curbsiding in Ontario.
The UCDA was told that those who've never been registered as dealers or salespeople
would have received Registrar's "warning" letters; while others would
be sent on for investigation and prosecution.
